Dan

We said goodbye today to our life companion Dan after nearly sixteen years, as smart and loyal a friend as you could wish for. There is a hole in our hearts and lives.

As you can see he was always a good looking boy, he appeared on TV once dragging Julie around a garden attempting to train him, and has appeared in endless posts here.

He was a farm and a beach dog. Always up for a ride in the Mule or running ahead of it and always up for a visit to the beach in the morning. He just loved to work. He patrolled the property constantly making sure anything that came near, cars up the driveway, aeroplanes flying 20,000 feet overhead, any tractor or lawnmower, horses running in the arena or paddocks next door got a sound barking at and boy could he bark. He would shatter your eardrums in the car if you sneezed, yes he hated that, or for several years, if he saw a white van out of the back window, I really don’t know where he got that one from! A lady once commented in the local shop that she could hear him barking on the beach in the mornings and she lived about a mile away.

He was surrounded by good friends as well. Rarely, if ever, left alone he had a wide circle of friends.  Thank you to all our neighbours who “Dan dog sat” throughout the years and a special thanks to Rose and Roger and of course his very favourite surrogate Mum, Shirley.

He really was one of those special dogs. He had an amazing environment to live in, he gave so much back. He followed us everywhere. Dan you are gone, sadness is a bit overwhelming at the moment, but here’s to you and a life well lived.

Thanks so much to my wonderful hubby Andrew for writing this. Safe journeys Dan .. we will always love you

  10. Dear Julie and Andrew. I am so sorry for your loss. Nothing can describe such a relationship, so I won’t even try. Suffice to say we lost our boy, Chewy, three years ago almost to the day, so I can track pretty closely with what you both must be feeling. My best wishes to you both, and my best wishes to Dan as he goes off to his next adventure. The next to the last photo is beautiful, and it brought tears.

  11. Julie, I’m so very sorry for your loss as we went through the dame loss two years ago in January. I sobbed for a year and still tear up when I go on one of our walks on the farm. She slept with us from the day we brought her home until the day she died. I’ll be thinking of you and grieving with you.
    Love ya bunches, Rita

  13. It is so terribly, terribly hard to lose our fur children…the sadness is more than over-whelming for it encompasses the loss of member of the family/team/and soul. That photo of Dan walking away his reflection in the water says it all. I am so so sorry. I am crying for you, because I do understand that pain. Hugs

    • Hi Tim … he sure did have a wonderful life and will be missed terribly. That photo means a lot to me too … thank you

  14. Dearest Julie, I am so sorry for your loss. You two have provided a wonderful lifestyle for all of your pets. And Dan contributed to what only special furry friends can do. Love from Oregon…

    • Thanks Steve … it does symbolize departure, but you know, I think he will always be with us

  15. Julie and Andrew, I am so sorry to hear about Dan. Our animals give us so much and ask for so little in return. He was a lucky dog to have the run of the beach and Frog Pond Farm. Your walks are going to feel empty for awhile. Think of Dan rolling in the sand and barking up a storm somewhere not far. Lisa and I send you our deepest condolences. Take care.

    • Hello Bob … thanks for your kind words. Those walks are going to seem super empty .. But you know, I can’t help but think of him rolling in the sand and barking up a storm somewhere not far away! Thanks so much for your special words – and please say hello to Lisa for us.

  24. Really sorry to hear about Dan, Julie. Shirley told us today and she ALMOST managed not to cry 😉 Strikes me that Dan had a wonderful, socialable life – quite the Man About Town …. I remember the times he lay on Linda’s porch amongst our spinning wheels and we have all followed his health reports over recent years 😉 He had a larger-than-life life!

    • Hello Lisa … I so appreciate you leaving a comment as I know it can be tricky! Dear Shirl … I bet she almost managed not to cry! He did have a wonderful life and was the ‘Man about Town’ for sure. He was incredibly lucky to spend time with you girls – a big thanks to you all .. He was larger than life, no doubt about it!

  25. I am so sorry for your loss, Julie and Andrew. Everyone who ever had animals close and dear, knows the feeling. And after such a long and great relationship – the sorrow and grief is almost unbearable. I lost my Mille 2014, and I still think I will never see his like again. So beautifully written and accompanied by loving photos – I am still crying. A lovely tribute to Dan. The last photo but one went straight to my heart. ♥♥♥

  26. What a lovely tribute, Julie, to a dear and loyal friend. I’m so sorry that he is no longer with you. He lived a wonderful and long life with you and gave you so much. That’s the remarkable thing about dogs–they give so much and expect little in return.
